What Is Clamp Multimeter?

2026-03-12

A clamp multimeter, also known as a clamp meter or clamp-on ammeter, is a versatile electrical testing tool that combines a basic digital multimeter with a current sensor. Its distinctive feature is the hinged "jaw" that clamps around a conductor, allowing current measurement without breaking the circuit.

How It Works:

The jaws contain a current transformer (for AC) or Hall Effect sensor (for AC/DC) that detects the magnetic field generated by current flow. This enables non-contact current measurement up to 1000A or more, making it safer and more convenient than traditional series-connected ammeters.

Key Functions:

  • Non-contact current measurement (AC and/or DC)

  • Voltage measurement (AC/DC)

  • Resistance and continuity testing

  • Capacitance and frequency measurement (advanced models)

  • Temperature measurement (with thermocouple probe)

Applications:

Clamp multimeters are indispensable for electricians, HVAC technicians, and industrial maintenance professionals. They are ideal for troubleshooting motors, monitoring load currents, verifying circuit breaker panels, and conducting field service work where circuit interruption is impractical or dangerous.
